How Do I Get Over Writer’s Block?

There’s a special place in hell for the person who told us the key to writing is to ‘just write.’

You’re not a bad writer.
You’re not lazy.
And no, the answer isn’t to “just keep writing.”

If you’re reading this, you’re probably not just “having a bad writing day.”

You’re not just distracted. You’re stuck.

The deep, soul-sucking, “maybe I’m not cut out for this” kind of stuck.

Your story feels flat.
Your characters are silent.
Your confidence is in freefall.

First, breathe.

You’re not broken.
You’re a writer.
And this? This is part of it.

But most advice gets it wrong. They tell you to push harder. Power through. Word sprint. Hit a deadline.

That advice is for machines — not artists.

What You Actually Need Is a Reset

That’s why I created UNSTUCK: A Creative Toolkit for Writers Who Feel Lost — a 10-minute reset to help you:

  1. Diagnose why you’re really blocked

  2. Reignite your story using character, theme, and tension

  3. Refuel your creativity without guilt

  4. Ease back into writing with joy — not pressure

Writer’s Block Isn’t About Discipline.

It’s About Discovery.

If your story suddenly stalls out, it’s not you. It’s the story.

The most common culprit? Your characters.

Here’s just one of the tools from UNSTUCK:

🧠 The Character Check-In
Ask yourself:

  1. What does my character want more than anything?

  2. What are they afraid will happen if they don’t get it?

  3. What lie do they believe about themselves?

  4. What flaw keeps sabotaging them?

  5. What truth are they moving toward — even if they don’t know it yet?

If you’re stuck, chances are your character is too shallow… or too safe. And if your protagonist isn’t alive, your story won’t move.

It’s Not Just the Characters

Sometimes your scenes stall out too. When they do, UNSTUCK gives you this checklist:

  • Is there enough tension in the world?

  • Is there a gap between what the character wants and what’s in their way?

  • Are the emotional and practical stakes high?

  • Does each scene pose a question the reader wants answered?

  • Is there an overarching mystery?

Tension isn’t danger. It’s pressure.
It’s what keeps your story’s heartbeat alive.

You Don’t Need to Power Through. You Need to Refuel.

You can’t write from an empty well.

UNSTUCK shows you how to refill creatively — without guilt:

  • Go on a writing date (museum, bookstore, or field trip for your character)

  • Read something emotionally opposite your genre

  • Listen to a weird podcast

  • Reconnect with inspiration, not obligation

This isn’t procrastination.
This is input.
This is how the brain connects dots.

When You’re Ready to Return…

Don’t dive into a full draft. Start where the spark is.

  • Freewrite your character’s thoughts

  • Revisit your moodboard or soundtrack

  • Journal as your protagonist

  • Write a scene out of order

  • Cast your WIP with actors

You’re not rebuilding. You’re reentering.
Start with what feels most alive.
